Biogeography rather than substrate type determines bacterial colonization dynamics of marine plastics

Since the middle of 20th century, plastics have been incorporated into our everyday lives at an exponential rate. In recent years, negative impacts plastics, especially as environmental pollutants, become evident. Marine plastic debris represents a relatively new and increasingly abundant substrate for colonization by microbial organisms, although full functional potential these organisms is yet to be uncovered. present study, we investigated type incubation location drivers marine bacterial community structure development on i.e. , Plastisphere, via 16S rRNA amplicon analysis. Four distinct types: high-density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low-density (LDPE), polyamide (PA), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), glass-slide controls were incubated five weeks in coastal waters four different biogeographic locations (Cape Verde, Chile, Japan, South Africa) during July August 2019. The primary driver Plastisphere composition was identified location, biogeography, while did not significant effect composition. communities consistently dominated classes Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidia, irrespective sampling or type, however core observable lower taxonomic levels. Overall, this study sheds light question whether are shaped physicochemical properties they grow environment which immersed. This enhances current understanding variability including biofilms from previously uncharted Southern Hemisphere.
